                 The Little Pakistani Genius
                             Arfa Karim

The world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional(MCP)

Born in Faisalabad, Pakistan, the little Arfa Karim was only 5 when she first came across these strange white “boxes” in her school which later she knew were computers. “When you push a button, something magically appears on the box” said Arfa.
After she persuaded her father to buy her one, Amjad Karim –who serves with a U.N. peace making force in Africa, began to notice his young daughter’s extraordinary “technical” talent, that’s when he convinced APTECH –an advanced computer institute near their home- to enroll her as a student for she was still too young to apply.

The Young Daughter of Pakistan make us proud when she had become the first Microsoft Certified Professional in the year 2004 at the age of only 9. She was Born in January 14th, 1995 in Faisalabad, she got the title of the youngest ever MCP by 2004-2008. Arfa was always a rare child. Her parents said that she displayed signs of an outstanding memory from a extremely early age. When her dad bought her a computer, that is only for e-mail purposes, she exhibited skills that exceeded her years. Studying the things she had been accomplishing, her father took the girl to APTECH, a nearby computer institute. Whilst giving a conversation on ARcast, she explained the storyline in her words: Actually when I was six years of age, I received my personal first computer; when you see new stuff you want to find, what exactly is it? How does will it be work? I Really used to play around and I got to know various things about it from the reach as well as demo method and in about two years I obtained to know how to work on windows and different softwares completely. After that, I did previously make a lots of presentations for my dad as well as my mom. My father and my mom used to watch myself and say she got abilities in computers therefore then they took me to an institute close by our house and there I began to learn C sharp and then I give exam of MCP. Certainly, there she advanced a lot as well as passed the Microsoft Certified Application Developer qualification in 4 months. Microsoft officials in Pakistan tested her programming abilities through an additional exam as well. Then She was invited to Microsofts Redmond campus by Bill Gates for a private meeting and to better introduce her to the organization as well as provide people at the campus a chance to meet her. She went to the campus together with her father while her mother and two young brothers remained home. A few days long tour included clinical tours and also informal times with Microsoft staff as well as executives. She made a good effect on Gates as well as every person who met the girl and entertained Bill Gates with her confidence while she questioned him about the little percentage of women on the Redmond campus. It needs to be balanced  the same amount of men with an equal amount of women, she said soon after. Somasegar, a company vice chairman at Microsoft, described her in his website, declaring: She is a Fifth grader who visited all of us at Microsoft for a few days together with her father. We had a large amount of fun in meeting Arfa and obtaining a chance to understand what motivated the girls to shoot for such an accomplishment from such a early age. She undoubtedly has some clear ideas about the kinds of conditions she envisions technology may enable sometime soon. It was her who chosen to invite Arfa to Redmond after reading about the girl in a inside company newsletter.

Child prodigy. Aarifa Karim loses race for her life..

LAHORE: Aarifa Karim Randhawa, the worlds youngest Microsoft certified professional lost the battle for her life after suffering from heart failure, her paternal uncle confirmed on Saturday.
On December 22, Aarifa was admitted to Lahore’s CMH hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. On December 29, doctors said there was no hope for her survival, and that her life support could be switched off ‘at any time’.
However, she had then miraculously responded to certain stimuli, as recently as January 14. Aarifa’s father, Amjad Karim Randhawa had said that she had shown the Plantar Reflex when her foot was stimulated. “Her toes curved slightly downward when her foot was tickled,” he said, adding that earlier she had exhibited the Corneal Reflex, whereby her eyes blinked a few times.
Doctors had said that her brain had shown activity over the past four days, making minor improvements.
Arfa Karim Sung a song, “Yeh Watan Tumhara Hay Tum ho pasbaan is kay ”, “ This country is yours and you are the soldiers of this land”

We are missing you sister........

Awesome Pakistan: Locally underrated, globally misunderstood

Out of all the places in the world, why on earth would you want to go to

Pakistan?”
A question I have heard in various forms by countless people. After six months of living in Pakistan, I imagined the questions and shock would have settled by now. However, I am still continuously asked why I am here. On many occasions, Pakistanis have been just as shocked as anyone else as to why a non-Pakistani would ever want to stay in such a country.

I am not only troubled with the misconceptions and ignorance of non-Pakistanis, yet find it just as upsetting that locals think so poorly of their own nation and people. I am well aware of the socio-economic and political factors that are hindering the progress, prosperity and full potential of Pakistan, yet do Pakistanis really have nothing to be proud of?

Nonetheless, I can’t ignore the countless problems facing Pakistan. Poverty is widespread and visible on the streets. It is rare to go out of the house without being approached by beggars. The gap between rich and poor is massive. Poverty levels match up with the extremely low overall literacy rate of approximately 50% and the millions of school-aged children that are not even enrolled in school. It is also linked to a number of other socio-economic factors facing millions of Pakistanis, however most of these issues are ones faced by many developing nations around the world and not specific to Pakistan per se.

Unfortunately, Pakistan has a reputation of being an uncivilized and

inherently violent country. I was recently asked...

“So, are there roads in Pakistan?”

Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Also, I cannot even keep count of the amount

of times I am asked:

“Are you safe there?”

Contrary to popular belief, I have never felt in danger or unsafe while living in Pakistan and it is more developed than the average outsider might think. I have come to learn that a number of years back, quite a few foreigners used to study, work and vacation in Pakistan. Safety was not an issue for locals and foreigners alike and the image and progress of the country was significantly better than it is now. Pakistanis genuinely desire peace and security just as much as anyone else and many even reminisce about the good old days.

Yes, the current security and development situation has deteriorated more recently. For example, I have been in Karachi during the horrendous bloodshed and indiscriminate killings going on throughout parts of the city. It seemed that almost every day I was hearing about how dozens of people were killed in the most gruesome ways. The general trend is such that the less privileged communities are most affected by these occurrences. Sadly, locals seem to be almost immune to such violence and political conflict. Some might take a few moments to discuss, watch or read about such happenings but at the end of the day, life goes on. Can we really blame them?

In my eyes, one of the main causes of this violence and other problems in the country that are hindering Pakistan’s development is politics. Pakistani politics is as dirty as it gets and the average Pakistani is left suffering as a result. Corruption is rampant and the leadership has not shown a genuine interest in the well-being of Pakistanis and the overall progress of the country.

Yet, we can’t deny that similar or comparable problems are happening in different parts of the world; even places you would not expect. The ethnic/sectarian/political conflicts of Karachi are almost mirror images of those in Beirut (past and present). Various forms of violence have occurred recently in the UK and Norway on a relatively large scale. Security is not guaranteed anywhere. Every country has its set of problems. The point is, Pakistan should not constantly be singled out or misrepresented.

With all that said, I genuinely believe that Pakistan has great potential. People severely underrate it and discount all the wonderful things this country has to offer. Living here has made me appreciate the natural and historical beauty found in different parts of Pakistan. I still remember how captivated I was during my bus ride from Lahore to Islamabad. The serenity and greenery of the fields was truly breathtaking, not to mention the mountainous terrain once reaching closer to Islamabad. Also, Karachi’s beaches add character to the city and are enjoyed by all people, regardless of their background. Pakistan definitely has it all; from mountains to beaches, hills to plains and forests to deserts.

An interesting observation I have made is that in some neighborhoods of Pakistan the homes are so unique and beautiful that it is difficult to find two that are exactly the same! Each has a particular style and touch to the exterior as well as the interior. Sometimes, I love driving around the streets of Lahore and Karachi just to observe the diversity of homes with their colors, shapes and landscapes. The houses are just lovely!

On top of it all, I personally have met some of the most amazing, genuine and down to earth people in Pakistan. For the most part, I have felt welcomed and respected by locals ranging from the modest gatekeepers to the more affluent and educated populations. Even though my Urdu skills are basic, people really appreciate my efforts and are happy when a foreigner tries to use the local language.

For example, the first time I interacted with my friend’s gatekeeper I said:

“As-salam alaykum, aap kaise ho?”

(Peace be with you. How are you?)

He had the biggest smile on his face and replied by saying:

“ Theek thaak! Wah wah, aap Urdu bol saktee hain? Bohot acha!”

(I am well thank you. Wow! You can speak in Urdu – fantastic!)

I have faith that Pakistan can overcome the obstacles hindering its prosperity through proper and genuine leadership. I find that many Pakistanis disregard the positive aspects of this country and my hope is that Pakistanis do not give up on their country but rather actively take on a role in making positive changes.

As for everyone else, I hope there will be a realization that Pakistan is in fact civilized, peaceful and beautiful in so many way..

                                  AWESOME PAKISTAN MOTORWAY POLICE

                                                     NICE & CAREFUL

Pakistan Motorway Police has earned the respect and confidence of the public within a short span of time. Common perception about police and policing in Pakistan is hopelessly dismal. Where corruption has become almost a disease in Pakistan affecting every aspect of our political, social and economic sectors, corruption in the police stands out like a sore thumb and its conspicuousness is due to its criticality and impact on good governance of the country and the negative general public view or impression it is bound to create. The country has been contending with the issue of corruption for the last several decades, but its efforts could best be labeled as “fire fighting” attempts at curbing public sector corruption.

Not very long ago the traffic culture on the highway of Pakistan was characterized by a contemptuous disregard for traffic rules, an almost non-existent enforcement apparatus, and a very high ratio of accidents. Every year 700 people lost their precious lives and another 75000 received injuries in road accident. This meant a staggering 19 deaths and 205 injuries per day. The response of the Government of Pakistan to all this was swift and sweeping, and that was the establishment of National Highways & Motorway Police, which was specifically tasked to rectify the situation. This was easier said than done, but the gauntlet was valiantly taken up by the pioneers of the force. It was a gigantic task that needed considerable mental and material input. The same was, however, made available and the force became operational. The result has been a success, that could not only be referred to as exemplary but bewildering as reflected in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Report, 2002: -

“With regard to petty and middling corruption, the consensus has been that there is hardly an arm of Government which does not suffer acutely from corruption, with the exception of the Motorway Police.”

Fortunately, Pakistan’s Motorway Police has emerged as a model and an example of a corruption free police. It is commonly believed, supported by studies, that the Motorway Police is actually a graft free police force, created as a result of cultural transformation in policing. Seventy percent of the research on policing in the world encompasses police culture and its effect on police conduct. It has been established by independent research and analysis that prevalent police culture determines the prevalent police conduct with the public. Therefore, it would be naive to expect public friendly policing from a para-military policing outfit. This can only be possible if a strategy is formulated to transform the para-military culture by qualitative improvement in the training ecology and the work station ecology of the organization as reflected below:

The success story of Pakistan Motorway Police revolves around the cultural transformation in police attitude by ensuring qualitative improvement in the training ecology and provision of compatible work station ecology. Needless to say that the service oriented and public friendly police model was the ultimate goal through this cultural transformation.

The research studies into the personality profile of a police officer reveal that the common policeman suffers from a deep seated syndrome which we may name as the “stress prone personality disorder”, caused by one or more of the following factors which lead to his erratic and delinquent behavior, giving rise to ever increasing corruption, moral as well as intellectual, human rights excesses, misdemeanor and misbehavior with the general citizenry and a mindset that police cannot be subjected to any kind of accountability or scrutiny.

     Introduction of Pak Army

The ground still bears the signs of the stampeding horses of invaders

the hills echo with the battle cries of the brave warriors of the past.
A region that bears testimony and resounds with the rich history of the past
, the marauders who came to acquire wealth, the Muslim conquerors
who came to spread the faith in this region, architectural
wonders now in ruins silently proclaim to the world tales of a glory long lost.
The region, now comprising Pakistan, is replete with stories of wars, battles,
feuds and various revolutionary and military endeavours.
The sub-continent was partitioned into two distinct states due to unbridgeable
ideological differences between the Hindus and Muslims,
 hence Pakistan came into being
in August 1947 with the efforts of
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father
of the Nation. Presently, the ninth most populous country in the world,
Pakistan covers an area of 800,000 square kilometers, surrounded by
Arabian Sea, Iran, Afghanistan, Soviet Union, China and India
. Pakistan is a country that enjoys diverse sub-cultures,
resultant of being host to major historical
events and influences of various civilizations.
Similarly, it is a land that harbours diverse environmental facets within itself,
 from deserts to glaciated ice, to rich forests, fertile plains, rivers, lakes etc;
a region that is bestowed with the best that nature has to offer.
The Pakistan Army at its inception presented a dismal picture as it
was disinherited in its legitimate share of military assets in an effort to
starve it to inadequacy and vulnerable to subjugation.
An institution that plays a major role and is at the forefront of all national
and international endeavours to restore peace wherever a human
conflict or natural calamity arises. The men of the Pakistan Army
truly reflect the warrior spirit, weilding weapons for peace, doing
justice to the strong military legacy handed down through time
by their ancestors. These are the men who while adhering to the
traditional spirit acquire training on modern
methods conforming to international standards
, at the same time setting standards of their own,
which have achieved worldwide acclaim.
These men of the Pakistan Army are adept at the art of warfare
, their inborn skills have been honed at the various institutions
of Military Training throughout the country. Steeped in rich traditions
, many of these institutions date back to the 19th Century.
Institutions that exude an aura of strong military values,
imparting skills through competent instructors,
who having acquired training within the country and abroad,
skillfully extend it to the prospective trainees.
All the schools have a distinguished history of proficiency
and contribution toward developing a professional National
Army, and produced men who have graced the annals of
military history. These institutions are strategically located
in specific terrain conducive to the learning of particular art
of warfare and suitably equipped with modern training
techniques, computerized system and ability to absorb foreign
trainees while providing to them the required infrastructure.
"Arms for Peace", therefore, is a vital link in the ideological
chain of the Pakistan Army. An institution that weilds weapons for peace,
inculcating in its men the spirit to promote peace throughout the world.
Same is reflected in its active participation wherever a situation requires
its efforts and services to restore normalcy. With their extensive
experience, the Pakistani troops are acclaimed for their peace-keeping
endeavours throughout the world. These are the men who bear the
expertise and excellence in skills. Pakistan Army, today, stands as a
cohesive, dependable and a well cultured professional force providing
physical and psychological security to the country.

Pakistan army chief

Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayan

Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was born in village Manghot located in
Gujar Khan District Punjab Province, on 20 April 1952. The town
of Manghot is situated on the
Pothohar Plateaubounded on the east by the Jhelum River
, on the west by the Indus River.
 Ashfaq's father was a Non-commissioned officer (NCO)
 in the Pakistan Army.

His humble background as the son of an NCO has endeared
him to the junior ranks of the army. After attending a local
high school, Ashfaq successfully enrolled in the Military College
Jhelum, Sarai Alamgir and made a transfer to Pakistan Military
Academy in Kakulwhere he graduated with a bachelor's degree in
1971 in his class of 45th PMA Long Course.

The story of the advancement of Pakistan
Army is the tale of the birth of Pakistan
, since its inception from the freckled nucleus of a regal legacy to
its present status of an avant-garde and combat-tested field Army;
it is an epoch of development which leaves behind its trials and tribulations,
calamities and conflicts, as it struggled,
with scarcity of possessions to embark on its shaping years.
This is, conceivably, the enormous paradigm amongst few armies in
history to have faced a war right at its setting up and,
in the subsequent years, besides guarding the geographical precincts
, it is always prepared to protect the ideological boundaries of the country.

Nations can dream of their socio-economic progress and development
only when they are sure that their guardians are strong enough to
ensure protection and peace. In case of Pakistan, a strong defence
was all the more a stark reality to face the encounters and
hostilities with unflinching courage. Our chivalrous soldiers of
brave Armed Forces, apart from defending the country’s borders,
always remained in the forefront of national development.
Whether floods, earth-quakes and other natural calamites,
maintain law and order or the UN peace efforts,
the performance of our officers and men,
always earned national and international acclaim from their
 friends and foes alike.

Army is an iridescent view, a vast canvas of vivid colours,
 pulsating with powerful
currents of life. It has a flow and a body of
its own whose velocity is sustained by noblest of traditions applied in
very exacting manner. While it aims at destroying the aggressor,
it requires its members to possess mettle of
highest quality with sound character, most pure.
The soldiers have invincible belief in the concept of Ghazi or
Shaheed and it provides them great motivating force with
specific element of self negation in the way of Almighty Allah,
make them special breed of men.

It is the only profession in the world taken

-up by the ablest bodies who vow to lay down
their life willingly, in the way of Almighty Allah.
It has a rhythm of its own perfected over
hundreds of years of war fare, reflecting the
 very shades of Islamic accomplishments,
soaked in local traditional history and continuity.
 Selfless bravery sacrifice and monumental
endurance of adversity are the pillars of this splendid institution.
